Task Force: New R.1 Variant Proof Covid-19 Still a Threat

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Covid-19 is still a threat even though the number of new infections reported has declined significantly in Indonesia. This is apparent in the emergence of another new variant, the R.1, that the WHO is monitoring.
"Currently, the R.1 variant is still classified as 'under-monitoring' by the WHO, and so we need to follow up as a precautionary principle," Covid-19 Task Force spokesman Wiku Adisasmito said in an online press conference, September 28.
The R.1 variant was first identified in Japan in January this year. Since then, it has spread to numerous countries, including the United States.
"The wisest way to address this is by consistently implementing health protocols in all aspects of life, without being too afraid," Wiku said.
Previously, the Coordinator for the Implementation of Community Activity Restrictions or PPKM Java-Bali, Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan, ensured that international arrivals protocols are were tightened, especially for those arriving from countries with a high tendency of Covid-19 transmission, among them the US and Turkey. Everyone arriving from overseas are subjected to eight-days of quarantine.
