TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The public was recently surprised by a video of a retired traffic police, Agus Dartono, who was forced to beg in the streets of Semarang City as a ‘silver man’ - painting oneself with silver paint across the body - just to survive.
He was initially captured by authorities in the city during a street raid by the local Public Order Agency (Satpol PP) against street beggars.
A police spokesperson claims the Central Java Police headquarters have sent Dartono aid in the form of money and daily staples, Antaranews reported.
“It has caught the attention of the regional Police chief,” said Central Java Police spokesperson Grand Commissioner Iqbal Alqudusy in a written statement on Sunday, September 26. “[Dartono] was ashamed to ask relatives and coworkers for help.”
The retired police personnel are also scheduled to meet with the Semarang police chief for further assistance and a job offer that would help Dartono’s livelihood in the future.
