TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Pregnant women are now recommended to get COVID-19 vaccination shots. Women during pregnancy have a low immune system, making them more susceptible to disease or infection. The COVID-19 vaccination for pregnant women is aimed at building antibodies that might also protect their babies.
Quoted from the Bali Health Agency’s website Diskes.baliprov.go.id, there are several requirements that must be fulfilled by pregnant women to get the vaccine:
- Pregnant women with blood pressure above 140/90 mmHg are not recommended to get vaccinated and are referred to a hospital.
- Pregnant women with certain symptoms such as swollen feet, headaches, heartburn, and blurred vision need to take further examination prior to the vaccination and be referred to a hospital.
- Pregnant women with a history of heart disease, asthma, diabetes, lung disease, HIV, hyperthyroidism, chronic kidney disease, and liver disease, are allowed to get the vaccine as long as the disease is under control.
- Pregnant women with autoimmune diseases must first receive a doctor's approval and get the vaccine if the condition is under control.
- Pregnant women with a history of severe allergies must be subjected to special monitoring, especially after the vaccination to anticipate side effects.
- Pregnant women under treatment for blood clotting disorders, blood disorders, immune deficiencies, and are recipients of blood transfusions, corticosteroid treatment, or chemotherapy, are recommended to postpone vaccination and be referred to a hospital.
Getting COVID-19 vaccination, however, cannot fully protect individuals from the virus. Pregnant women are still obliged to follow predetermined health protocols in order to minimize the risk of contracting the disease.
