TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Tourism and Creative Economy Minister Sandiaga Uno monitored the preparations for the XX 2021 National Sports Week (PON) in Papua. He said the event which will be held on October 2-15, will be a turning point for the regional economy.
“This is a momentum for Papua and Indonesia to boost the growth of sports tourism, equitable development of Papua, and the turning point for the recovery of tourism and the creative economy in Papua,” he said in a statement, Wednesday, September 22.
Sandiaga said the national games would empower the economy so as to improve the welfare of locals. According to him, 25,000 creative products or noken had been prepared as souvenirs for athletes and PON officials. The production involved hundreds of creative economy workers.
Additionally, more than 3,000 people would be involved in the preparations in stadiums across the country’s easternmost province. Thousand native Papuan dancers would also be invited to enliven the event.
Although the government limited the number of spectators to a maximum of 25 percent of the total capacity, the event was believed to drive the number of domestic tourists.
“We are developing community-based tourism villages, creative villages, nature and culture-based tourism, as well as responsible and equitable tourism,” Sandiaga Uno said.
