TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The National Police has named three suspects in the Tangerang prison fire who were stationed at the penitentiary’s Class I prison section as prison guards.

The Metro Jaya Police's general crime director, Sr. Comr. Tubagus Ade Hidayat, at his office on Monday, September 20, said the suspects’ initials are RU, S, and Y.

The three suspects are charged under Article 359 of the Criminal Code (KUHP) on negligence that leads to the death of another person and face up to five years' imprisonment.

“The three men will be summoned for further questioning as suspects,” said Ade.

A total of 49 inmates died and 73 others were injured due to the fire at the overcrowded prison block that housed 122 inmates. “There were 41 people who died, eight were injured, 72 people were slightly injured,” said Jakarta Metro Police Chief Insp. Gen. Fadil Imran at the location on September 8.

Most victims of the Tangerang prison fire were unable to flee from their cells as it was locked. Firefighters needed two hours to subdue the flames.
