Jasuka Undersea Cable behind Indihome, Telkomsel Connection Issues

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Telkom corporate communications VP Pujo Pramono said the internet connection problems besetting Indihome and Telkomsel users on Sunday (9/19) stemmed from technical issues at the Java, Sumatra and Kalimantan (Jasuka) submarine cable communication system.
The problems were detected from a location 1.5 kilometers off the coast of Batam at the depth of 20 meters below the ocean surface. Telkom reportedly mobilized a team to repair the infrastructure.
This technical issues affected a wide range of users across East Java, Bali, Nusa Tenggara, Natuna Island, Kalimantan, Sulawesi, and Papua. Basic telecommunication such as phone calls and SMS texting services remain unaffected but there was a disruption in the internet network.
Citing Telkom.co.id, the Jasuka submarine communication cable is one of the longest in the world that consists of four 40G canals with capacity of up to 16 times that of conventional lines. The Jasuka is also part of the Indonesian digital network that is eyeing to cover 90 percent of Indonesian regencies and cities to be interconnected.
Citing TeleGeography in 2020, there were 406 submarine cables that span across the globe with a total length of 1.2 million kilometers, which include the Jasuka.
