TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - One of the victims of the Tangerang prison fire that killed dozens of inmates at 01:45 the morning of September 8, was a 51-year old Portuguese identified as Ricardo Ussumane Embalo.
His body was handed over to Portuguese Embassy representatives in Jakarta on September 20, 2021 at the National Police Medical Forensic Hospital, witnessed by the Acting Portuguese Ambassador to Indonesia Emanuel Bernardes Joaquim.
After looking at the body of the deceased, the Ambassador thanked the hospital officers who managed to identify Ricardo’s body, but he did not provide further statements, Antaranews reported.
The Indonesian Directorate General of Penitentiary initially suggested that Ricardo would be cremated, but was later denied by another prison official, Thurman Hutapea, who said that cremation would not be an option as the deceased was a Muslim.
A total of 41 inmates died and 73 others were injured due to the fire at the overcrowded prison. “Forty one people died, eight were injured, 72 people were slightly injured,” said Jakarta Metro Police Chief Insp. Gen. Fadil Imran at the location on September 8.
