TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Marine Affairs and Fisheries Ministry has targeted to create 1,000 new entrepreneurs in the fisheries sector by 2024.

The ministry's Director General for Marine and Fisheries Product Competitiveness Artati Widiarti said, the ministry has conducted trainings for entrepreneurs in the sector.

"This is our contribution to support the growth of national entrepreneurs as one major project in the Medium-term Development Plan," Widiarti said in a statement here on Sunday.

The training, conducted on September 17, was attended by 200 participants from 20 provinces.

It covered training on marine and fishery product processing, packaging and promotion design, online business strategy, and licensing.

In 2020, she said, the ministry has succeeded in creating 100 entrepreneurs in fish processing.

Director of Business and Investment Catur Sarwanto said, participants had earlier have a 3-month online training from June to August under the GoUKM training center.

Based on preliminary observation, 116 participants (58 percent) already run businesses in the sector and 84 others (42 percent) were still learning to start the business.

"We hope that all participants could become strong entrepreneurs, creative, innovative, competitive and could open new jobs for the locals, hence they can help increasing local economy," he said.

The Marine Affairs and Fisheries Minister Sakti Wahyu Trenggono has stressed the ministry's support to micro, small and medium-scale enterprises (MSMEs).

He said, the government would improve MSME's competence and capacity in promoting and marketing their products through e-commerce.
