TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - As many as 78,540,519 Indonesian citizens have received their first COVID-19 vaccine dose as of 12 p.m. local time on Saturday (September 18, 2021), the COVID-19 Handling Task Force has reported.

An additional 1,123,031 people received the first dose of vaccination on Saturday, it said.

Meanwhile, the total number of people who received the second dose, or were fully vaccinated against COVID-19, reached 44,716,570 people.

For the third dose, which is being administered to health workers, the number of recipients reached 838,878 nationwide, the task force informed.

Overall, the Indonesian government is aiming to vaccinate 208,265,720 citizens under the national vaccination program for building community immunity in the country.

The government is making efforts to expand COVID-19 vaccination coverage by providing more vaccination service facilities, including mobile vaccination services, drive-through vaccination facilities, and floating vaccination service facilities.

Earlier, Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto said that the government will continue to make efforts to accelerate vaccinations, both in terms of distribution and implementation, to anticipate the spread of COVID-19 in Indonesia.

According to him, the target for vaccine recipients has also been expanded to include children aged over 12 years and pregnant women.

He said he had conducted direct inspections at a number of vaccination centers to ensure that vaccinations are being carried out properly and discipline is being followed in implementing health protocols.

In a bid to boost immunity against COVID-19, the Indonesian government launched a nationwide vaccination program on January 13, 2021. President Joko Widodo was the first vaccine recipient under the program.
