TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The National Counterterrorism Agency (BNPT) on Thursday announced that it has dispatched an intelligence task force to Papua to assist the security measures during the 20th National Games (PON) in Papua.
This is deemed necessary to prevent acts of terror that would disrupt the quadrennial event held in the easternmost region of Indonesia.
BNPT chief Boy Rafli Amar to Tempo confirmed that “BNPT has sent a task force of intelligence [service members].”
However, he asserts that the BNPT will not play the main security role as it is conducted by the police and military personnel. “The leading security sector will be acted by police members and backed up by the Armed Forces (TNI).”
Boy Rafli previously mentioned potential security threats that could possibly take place during the Papua National Games in a House Hearing on September 15.
