TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Law and Human Rights Minister Yasonna Laoly on Wednesday said there are two foreign prisoners who died in the fire that engulfed the Tangerang Prison earlier this morning. The fire claimed the lives of 41 convicts who were still locked in their cells as the fire spread.
In a press statement, the Minister said the two came from Portugal and South Africa. However, he did not elaborate the specific cases that made them jailed at the penitentiary’s Block C 2, however the cell block generally houses drug convicts.
“We have communicated this with the Foreign Affairs Ministry, Embassy, and Consulates for their burials,” said Yasonna Laoly.
The fire blazed the Tangerang Prison Block C 2 at 01:45, which quickly rampaged the entire cell block that houses 122 inmates in total.
Prison wardens were not able to contain the fire that engulfed the packed penitentiary, but fortunately 81 convicts survived with 8 of them sustaining severe injuries and 32 minor injuries.
