AHY Speaks about Democracy and Breaking Free From the Pandemic

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Democrat Party Chairperson Agus “AHY” Harimurti Yudhoyono in a virtual discussion on Tuesday said a healthy dose of democracy is needed to assist Indonesia out of the crisis caused by the Covid-19 pandemic.
He argues that people actively monitoring and evaluating the government are needed, this active participation is essential in practicing democracy, Antaranews reported.
AHY acknowledged that a single command is needed to face the crisis but does not justify completely disregarding democracy in the process.
“No matter how urgent a condition is, the public’s critical voices, either from the press or civilians must not be silenced because the check and balance mechanism must absolutely be practiced,” said AHY in the virtual event on August 31.
He continued his speech by focusing on how democracy is implemented in the country, and argues that democracy must not be seen as an obstacle to help put the country back on its feet.
“I hope the country’s leaders either central or regional, legislators, and every stakeholder will listen to the voices of the people in mitigating the pandemic and helping recover the economy,” AHY added.
