TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Agriculture Ministry under the Belawan Agricultural Quarantine for the first time exported 4 tons of jengkol (dogfruit) and petai (bitter bean) from North Sumatra to Japan.
Citing the Belawan Agricultural Quarantine Center official website, the exports were shipped via the Port of Belawan on Saturday, August 28, to the strict requirements the Japanese market is known for.
“Not only are the commodities favorable in the domestic market but the North Sumatra jengkol and petai are ready to enter the Japan market and meet their demands,” said the head of the quarantine center Andi Yusmanto on August 28.
The export value of the 4 ton shipment is said to reach Rp399 million and a 43 percent increase compared to the previous year.
The Belawan Agriculture Quarantine Center currently engages 100 villages in North Sumatra in their program with the end goal of boosting the export volume and value from the region to more countries in the world.
