TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo in an ISEI webinar on Tuesday said there are positive signs suggesting a global economic recovery is imminent which he claims are evident in a number of indicators after a sluggish growth amidst the heat of Covid-19 pandemic.

“The signs of a global economic recovery are truly felt either from global manufacturing activities that are growing positive and export-imports that are seeing an increase,” said the President on August 31.

His statement is claimed to be backed by positive projections from international agencies forecasting global economic growth by the end of 2021 and early 2022. The International Monetary Fund (IMF) for example, predicts the growth will reach 6.0 percent for 2021 and 4..9 percent in 2022.

President Jokowi said the economic growth in the United States that usually logs below 1 percent had recorded a 5.4 percent growth while Germany is seeing 3.8 percent growth from initial sub-1 percent growth.

In Indonesia, signs of growth are evident in Q2 that logged a claimed 7.07 percent following a recession due to the direct impact of the pandemic. Inflation is relatively sustained in the 1.5 percent regions with public consumption growing to 5.9 percent and investments rising to 7.5 percent.

For the moment, export numbers during Indonesia’s Q2 increased by 31.8 percent. However, Jokowi said the country must stay alert as the economic growth is still hampered by the public activity restriction (PPKM).
