TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Global architecture media Rethinking the Future (RTF) recently ranked Jakarta at the top list of 10 cities with bad urban planning. Writer Sayani Mandal cited Jakarta as a chronically congested capital city that is choking on fumes and drowning in polluted water.
"The decades of thoughtless planning interventions have led the city to this state where the infrastructural mishaps highlight the poor quality of life,” wrote the RTF article.
Responding to this criticism, Jakarta legislator Gilbert Simanjuntak said this is regrettable as the city was considered as one of the most expensive cities in the world.
“The city administration should focus on developing the city and its people’s welfare. But the results show the exact opposite,” said the DPRD member on August 24.
Gilbert also mentioned the lack of trees at the National Monument (Monas) area and the promises of a fully integrated transportation system offered by governor Anies Baswedan before he was elected.
The lack of and mismanaged open green space or RPTRA also contribute to the poor city planning, along with malls being built in main city roads, subpar infrastructure and healthcare services.
