TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Presidential Chief of Staff Moeldoko said criticism is common in a government, including the use of murals. However, he called on the public to express criticism in a more civilized fashion.
“After all, the president is our parent whom we really must respect. Don't talk carelessly, don't carelessly say something through a sentence or in a picture,” said Moeldoko on Wednesday, August 18.
He said President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo is very open and never bothered with criticism. However, the head of state always reminds him that as an Eastern nation, Indonesia has customs, manners, and cultural standards that should be put forward.
Criticism and slander are now often indistinguishable by the government, he added. Moreover, there were many national figures who only worsened the situation.
Moeldoko also appealed to the public not to immediately consider the police call for people who expressed criticism as repression. He said the arrest could possibly aim at giving lessons to them.
Previously, a mural depicting the face of President Jokowi with his eyes covered with the words "404: Not Found" became a public spotlight. The mural created under the bridge in the Batu Ceper area towards Soekarno-Hatta Airport was later painted over by the police. Reports said that the police later searched for the mural creator.
