Jakarta Distributes 120,000 Doses of Moderna Vaccine to 35 Hospitals

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta -  Jakarta Health Agency Head Widyastuti said the city government has received 120,000 doses of Moderna vaccine from the Health Ministry. The Covid-19 vaccine produced by the US biotech firm will be intended for residents who have not received the Sinovac or AstraZeneca vaccines due to health reasons.

“We have distributed them to 35 hospitals according to the quota and we surely prioritize [facilities] with autoimmune services,” she said at the City Hall on Wednesday, August 18.

Widyastuti explained the Moderna vaccine must be administered immediately given its shorter expiration date once it is removed from its cold storage.

The injection of the Moderna vaccine in Jakarta began on August 17. People willing to get a jab must present a doctor's certificate stating that they are part of the group that cannot receive the Sinovac and AstraZeneca vaccines.

Assistant to the Jakarta Health Agency Head, Irma Yunita, said there are groups of people who cannot receive the two vaccines, such as those who suffer from severe allergies, including allergies to Sinovac or AstraZeneca vaccine ingredients, have abnormalities or high blood viscosity, require long-term treatment for disorders or diseases, and suffer from systemic autoimmune diseases such as lupus or vasculitis.

The Moderna Covid-19 vaccine was initially given to only health workers starting July 30, 2021. The Health Ministry then approved the vaccine for the public through a circular No. SR.02.06II/2025/2011.
