Human Rights Group Urge Against Ahmadiyah Discrimination in Kalimantan

18 August 2021 11:27 WIB

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Human rights groups that consist of the Indonesian Legal Aid Institute Foundation (YLBHI), Jakarta Legal Aid Institute (LBH Jakarta), Yayasan Inklusif, and Paritas Institute have sent an open letter demanding President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo to lift the ban against an Ahmadiyah Mosque in East Kalimantan.

The group deems the ban to be discriminatory and showcases intolerance by the Sintang Regency administration and local leadership communication forum (Forkompimda).

The open letter urges the President to instruct the Religious Affairs Ministry and Home Affairs Ministry “to directly act for the protection of the people and solve the discrimination and intolerance against Ahmadiyah congregates in the Sintang Regency.”

The East Kalimantan Ahmadiyah Mosque was banned and sealed under pressure from demands that came from the Sintang Muslim Alliance.

Ahmadiyah is generally a minority Muslim group that has long been persecuted for its beliefs. The human rights group demands that the freedom for congregates to practice their religion should be upheld.
