Expert Speaks about Covid-19 Cases Comparison During Independence Celebrations

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The 2018-2020 WHO South-East Asia Region director of infectious diseases Tjandra Yoga Aditama on Tuesday shared his assessment on the Covid-19 cases comparison from this year’s independence day and last year, which he said is a significant surge.
According to the professor, the cases on August 17, 2020, logged a total of 141,370 cases with 1,821 daily case increase at the time. Meanwhile, August 17, 2021, saw the health ministry log a staggering 3,803,479 total cases of coronavirus.
“This number is 27 times higher with additional new daily cases of 20,741,” said the professor on August 17, 2021.
He added that the statistics of covid-related deaths is much more worrying as August 17 this year saw 6,207 deaths related to Covid-19 while last year’s independence day logged 57 deaths. “This number grew exponentially,” said the University of Indonesia professor of pulmonology and respiratory medicine professor.
The deaths caused by Covid-19 in this year’s 76th Indonesia independence day amounted to 120,013 cases, which is nearly 20 times higher compared to the previous year.
