TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) on Tuesday found a pattern on the series of earthquakes that struck regions along the Java Island’s southern coastline which has moved from the West to the East from August 6 to 9, 2021.
“Will the significant earthquake activities continue to the eastern part such as East Java, Bali, or even to Lombok? This cannot be predicted,” said Daryono, BMKG earthquake and tsunami mitigation coordinator, to Tempo on August 10.
He explained that the epicenter of the south Java earthquake is between the megathrust quake zone and the active Eurasian fault. Most of July’s earthquakes came from this active quake cluster zone.
The Sunda Strait was previously hit by a magnitude 5.3 earthquake on August 6, 2021, at level IV on the MMI scale.
The doublet in the southern part of West Java on August 8 was measured at magnitude 4.1 at 17:30 with the second quake rocking the region at 20:07. This earthquake shifted to Central Java, with a magnitude 4.8 quake on August 9.
