TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) on Monday has responded to a statement made by United States President Joe Biden which alludes to the projection of Jakarta sinking and the relocation of the capital city, and does not need to be overreacted.
MUI calls for Indonesian scientists not to underestimate the projection and increase the awareness on this issue and not let the problem be dragged until the inevitable moment arises.
“The statement made by Joe Biden shall not be underestimated,” said MUI deputy chairperson Anwar Abbas in a statement on Monday, August 2, Antaranews reported.
Abbas conveyed his hopes for Indonesian experts to study the unfortunate projection related to global warming and prepare the steps needed to prevent a disaster of such magnitude “that can be donated to the world and government on how to prepare for it.”
In his written statement, the MUI deputy cited rapid development producing large amounts of carbon emissions as the main contributor to the climate change felt by coastal residents in the city and other areas in Indonesia.
Abbas has called for the central government and the Jakarta administration to coordinate its efforts that would help prevent or slow down the ‘Jakarta sinking’ projection. “As a nation we must be prepared with alternatives and solutions for the problem.”
