MRT Jakarta Passenger Numbers Drop by 80% during PPKM

30 July 2021 13:18 WIB

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The number of passengers at MRT Jakarta declined by 80 percent or 4,450 people on average per day in July 2021, during the emergency state of the public mobility restrictions (PPKM Emergency) that took effect since July 3, 2021.

The city’s urban transport President Director William Sabandar said the daily number of train users before the Emergency PPKM in June reached 22,686 people per day.

“The number of passengers in July was 4,450, only 10 percent of our target of 40,000,” William said in a webinar in Jakarta, Friday, July 30.

During the restrictions aimed at curbing the Covid-19 spread, the management limited the number of passengers boarding each car and temporarily closed three stations and several entrances. The daily operating hours were also adjusted. Officers also stood guard to check the mandatory worker registration document (STRP) for essential and critical sector employees.

Since train passengers are required to present STRP starting July 12, the lowest number of daily passengers was recorded at 491 people. “When the STRP was required, the number of passengers decreased even more,” William added. “We can see that STRP has succeeded in suppressing mobility.”

At present, MRT Jakarta is still limiting its operating hours, from 06:00 to 20:30 on Monday-Friday and from 06:00 to 20:00 on weekends and holidays.
