TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Jakarta Governor Anies Baswedan on Tuesday appreciated the Jakarta Metro Police after successfully revealing an alleged illegal oxygen tank import scheme. He said that such disgraceful acts amidst a pressing Covid-19 crisis are crimes against humanity.
“The people who seek for profit illegally while thousands of others are in need,” said the Jakarta governor in the National Monument (Monas) area in Central Jakarta on July 27. The Central Jakarta Police on Tuesday confiscated 166 oxygen tanks.
The Jakarta provincial government, Anies continued, provides its utmost support for police’s efforts to uncover similar cases in the future and even went as far to suggest publicly shaming the suspects.
“Let them realize that their actions are disgraceful for their children and grandchildren,” Anies Baswedan said.
Jakarta Metro Police chief Insp. General Fadil Imran said that the Health Ministry deemed 138 tanks out of the total 166 are fit and proper to be used on Covid-19 patients.
The oxygen tanks were then handed over to the Jakarta Administration to be distributed to healthcare facilities that have insufficient supply of oxygen.
