TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - In more than five provinces in Indonesia, hospital beds for Covid-19 patients are at over 80 percent capacity. Yogyakarta is one of them, with the highest bed occupancy rate (BOR)—exceeding Jakarta's that have been declining in the last few days.

"Jakarta today is at number four. Before, it was always number one," the Sulianti Saroso Hospital for Infectious Diseases (RSPI) director, Syahril Mansyur, said in a discussion in Jakarta, Wednesday, July 21.

According to Syahril's notes, the highest bed occupancy rate is in Yogyakarta hospitals with 88 percent, followed by Banten with 85 percent. Lampung, Jakarta, and East Java had 81 percent while East Kalimantan reported 80 percent.

Yogyakarta also has the highest occupancy rate for ICU beds with 92 percent—almost at full capacity, followed by Jakarta with 91 percent, Banten (90%), North Maluku (88%), West Java (85%), East Kalimantan (83 %), Riau Islands (82%), and South Sumatra (81%).

This increase in BOR occurred in line with the surging number of Covid-19 infections in Indonesia. "There were even three days when [new daily cases] exceeded 50,000. Let's see what happens tomorrow," Syahril said.
