TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Spokesman for the Coordinating Ministry for Maritime Affairs and Investment, Jodi Mahardi, explained two main reasons that caused the rising number of Covid-19 cases in Indonesia. On Wednesday, July 14, or 11 days after the enforcement of the emergency state of public mobility restrictions (Emergency PPKM), Indonesia logged up to 54,000 new infections.
Jodi said one of the causes was the low public compliance at the beginning of the policy enforcement. “So the impacts can be felt now. But, the public compliance is getting better now that we hope this condition will continue in order to suppress Covid-19 transmission,” said Jodi on Wednesday.
The other reason, he went on, was the data improvement. When the government found invalid data in an area, Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs and Investment Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan ordered data correction, Jodi informed.
“So it's not surprising that the number of cases increases. With the data improvement, we have valid data,” he added.
High people’s mobility was one of the causes of the surging number of infections in the archipelago, especially with the emergence of the Delta variant which is faster to spread.
Jodi said that Emergency PPKM must be carried out so that the transmission rate can be suppressed. “However, the high contact tracing also affects the hike in the number of confirmed cases,” he said.
