TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Religious Affairs Minister Yaqut Cholil Qoumas has issued a circular that effectively restricts religious event activities in houses of worship following the surge of Covid-19 cases in a number of Indonesian regions.
The official circular goes under the SE No.13/2021 on restrictions in religious activities in religious houses of worship on Wednesday, June 16.
The latest data from Indonesian health authorities show that the latest pandemic development caused the total number of cases to reach 2 million cases.
The circular effectively bans any religious activities in areas considered as Covid-19 red zones until further tests conclude that the number of cases has dropped. Apart from that, other non-religious activities that are temporarily banned include general meetings, wedding events, and community-level Quran recitations that are conducted in red and orange coronavirus zones.
Meanwhile, areas that have logged a smaller number of cases are permitted to conduct the aforementioned activities but are restricted to local communities under strict health restrictions.
