TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The government urged the House of Representatives (DPR) to immediately ratify the Sexual Violence Eradication bill (RUU PKS).
“Sexual violence cases keep rising and there are more complex forms of violence. This law is urgently needed to be passed,” said Presidential Chief of Staff Moeldoko when opening the kickoff meeting of the acceleration task force for the law issuance in Bina Graha Building, Jakarta, via a written statement on Tuesday, June 22.
Moeldoko, who is also one of the members of the task force steering committee, explained many forms of sexual assaults have not been regulated in existing regulations based on victims’ experiences, particularly women. There is also an urgency to accommodate the rights of victims that have not been fulfilled by far.
Thus, Moeldoko considered the bill as a hope to provide comprehensive handling in the prevention, case handling, protection, and recovery of victims.
Deputy Minister of Law and Human Rights Eddy O. S. Hiariej, who is also the task force chairman, was determined to meet with the DPR working committee (Panja) to further discuss the substance of the bill.
Eddy claimed he did not want the sexual violence eradication bill to overlap with other laws and regulations. Besides, the bill discussion is under several commissions of the DPR.
“We need to resolve issues about the substance [of the RUU PKS]. It must be re-examined and we need to sit together with the Attorney General's Office and the Police as part of the law enforcement unit,” said Eddy.
