TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Garuda Indonesia is set to stop offering flight services to Australia’s Perth and Melbourne starting from next month after the flag carrier studied that both flight routes were deemed unprofitable.

Garuda president director Irfan Setiaputra confirmed this but assured that other similar routes would be maintained due to their potential in the future but would carry other uses.

Citing Bisnis.com, Irfan on June 21 said “We will carry cargo for flights that are not profitable due to current conditions, such as Melbourne and Perth, which we will officially stop starting next month. Osaka has been dropped. One flight to Australia we decided to maintain is the flight to Sydney.”

He said flights to Sydney remain available but has been slashed to only one flight per week, especially after the Australian government has restricted people’s mobility into its country but otherwise for flights departing away from Australia.

“There were many Indonesians on a flight with 100 passengers returning to Indonesia because of heightened restrictions. We are only offering the Sydney flight once a week as long as there is connectivity,” said the Garuda Indonesia president.
