TEMPO.CO, JakartaThe Wisma Atlet Pademangan, North Jakarta, as an isolation center for COVID-19 patients has been closed, confirmed the Wisma Atlet COVID-19 Emergency Hospital’s spokesman Navy Lt. Col. M. Arifin.

“It was closed yesterday morning,” said Arifin on Monday, June 21.

The government opened Tower 8 of the athlete’s dorm for the COVID-19 isolation venue on Thursday, June 17. The facility can accommodate around 1,500 people.

The tower was initially set to accommodate Indonesian migrant workers or repatriated people for quarantine. However, the adjustment was made as the isolation bed capacity at the Wisma Atlet Kemayoran was nearly full.

According to Arifin, the Wisma Atlet Kemayoran in Central Jakarta is now still open to treat COVID-19 patients albeit its remaining capacity is only 18 percent. “[The facility] is still able to receive patients. [The capacity is] 18 percent left,” he added.

The number of COVID-19 positive cases in Jakarta is skyrocketing. The new infections even reached more than 4,000 per day.

On Sunday, June 20, the capital recorded the highest daily rise with 5,582 cases throughout the COVID-19 pandemic.

Arifin also said that the recent surge in COVID-19 cases at the Wisma Atlet Kemayoran after the Eid holidays was higher than that of after the Christmas and New Year holidays.
