Govt' Claims Air, Water Quality Fine After Pertamina Refinery Fire

18 June 2021 19:09 WIB

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Ministry of Environment and Forestry claimed that the air and water quality in the Cilacap Regency is within safe levels following the massive fire that broke out at the Pertamina Cilacap oil refinery.

The Ministry's director-general of pollution and environmental damage control Surya Anggara Widarto, said that the ministry has acted swiftly to supervise the air and water quality across four locations nearby the Pertamina operational site.

"We monitored 24 hours for 2.5 PM parameters," said Anggara in a statement on Friday, June 18, 2021.

He claimed that the study found no hazardous gasses that can threaten residents living nearby the oil refinery. In addition, the water sources used by people in the region show "visually accepted quality standards parameter of the Environmental Agency."

The same consideration was echoed by Pertamina's Cilacap branch spokesperson Hatim Ilwan, who said that the state-energy firm continues to closely monitor the air and water quality following the fire incident. He also claimed that the company had invited a team from the Center for Industrial Pollution Prevention Technology (BBTPPI) and has partnered with the Research and Industry Affiliated Institute (LAPI) from the Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB).
