TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs and Investment Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan met with the Investment Minister of Saudi Arabia, Khalid Al-Falih, in Jakarta yesterday, June 16. During the meeting, Luhut offered various collaborations with Saudi, including investment in Bank Syariah Indonesia.
“I am very happy that this meeting can take place. Hopefully, this opportunity will be a good first step for the partnership of Indonesia and Saudi Arabia in various fields in the future,” said Luhut in his statement on Thursday, June 17.
Luhut stated that Bank Syariah Indonesia or BSI is the largest Islamic lender in the country. The sharia bank is a merger of state-owned banks or Himbara, namely Mandiri Syariah, BRI Syariah, and BNI Syariah.
According to him, Saudi was interested to invest in Indonesia and would assign a team to discuss the details further. Other than investment in BSI, the meeting also discussed the possibility of wider cooperation through the Indonesia Investment Authority (INA).
Luhut said Falih was impressed by Indonesia's investment potential. Saudi Arabia then promised to communicate with the Public Investment Fund (PIF) and would arrange further meetings with INA.
Luhut also conveyed Indonesia's plan to build Indonesia Housing in Mecca to Minister Falih. The building could be a stopover for umrah and hajj pilgrims as well as serve as a market for Indonesian products.
