TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian National Police Chief General Listyo Sigit Prabowo in a statement encouraged every police personnel to help eradicate street thugs (preman) and gang-related crimes.
“The state will not lose out against thuggery. Thugs must be eradicated soon, arrest them and put an end to the issue,” said the Police Chief on Thursday, June 10.
This came after President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo directly ordered the police chief on Thursday. His request was made after the President paid a visit to North Jakarta’s Koja container terminal. Truck drivers actively entering and exiting the terminal complained to the President about problems related to thug activities.
Prabowo assured that the order has been officially expressed to the national police criminal investigation unit chief Comm. Gen. Agus Andrianto and every regional police chief. In addition, he called for arrests made against thugs to be made public in order to create a deterrent effect.
The Indonesian national police has a 110 hotline that is readily available 24 hours in handling reports about premanisme or thuggery.
