Minister Yasonna Vows ITE Law Revision to End Polemic on Vague Articles

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Law and Human Rights Minister Yasonna Laoly has pledged that the limited revision of the Law on Information and Electronic Transactions (ITE Law) that will be proposed by the government will resolve the polemic over the vague articles which has resulted in casualties.
“We will propose a limited revision of ITE Law. We will narrow it down and emphasize it so it will not be vague,” said Yasonna in a work meeting with the House of Representatives (DPR) Commission III on Wednesday, June 9.
He explained that the revised law will minimize the misuse of the law since by far, people report each other and that the reports are handled by the authorities.
Yasonna also said the government opted for the limited revision because the law is still needed to prevent misuse of the internet and social media. “A survey says that Indonesian users of social media are brutal,” he said.
Several articles that will be revised include Articles 27, 28, 29, and 36. Besides, there will be one additional article, namely 45C. The revised law is being drafted by the Law and Human Rights Ministry.
Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal, and Security Affairs Mahfud Md, meanwhile, said the law revision will clarify the substance related to hate speech, the spread of false news or hoax, online gambling, decency, defamation, and insults.
