Papua Police: Armed Criminal Group Burns Local Airport Tower

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Papua Police Chief Insp. Gen. Mathius Fakhiri on Friday confirmed news about a local armed criminal group (KKB) burning down the tower at the Aminggaru Ilaga Airport in Puncak, Papua on Thursday evening.
Prior to the incident, the police chief explained, a shootout happened between the armed criminal group and Indonesian Air Force personnel who were stationed at the airport on guard duty. This incident forced the airport to temporarily shut down its operations.
“The shootout happened on Thursday at around 17:40 Eastern Indonesia Time (WIT),” said the police chief on June 4.
The Papua Police claimed the local KKB also burned the airport’s waiting room, the air transportation housing complex, and a house owned by a local. No casualties have been reported following this incident and no criminal groups have claimed responsibility for the incident.
