TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The head of the Socio-politics Department of the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS), Arya Fernandes, said Friday the country lacked any significant military figure that would become an alternative presidential candidate for the 2024 presidential election.
He believes that the public is no longer interested in candidates with a military background as a potential leader for the country.
He said Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono or SBY was the last presidential candidate with a military background with sufficient charisma that led to his two-term presidency.
“Back in 2004 when SBY was a politician from the military (TNI), people still saw him as charismatic but the public preference around a leader with a military background after Jokowi no longer exists,” said Arya to Tempo on June 1.
Fernandes believes retired military politicians still played a role in political parties as they still had influence in political mobilization, building issues, and establishing movements. However, Arya said there were no candidates with a military background who were strong enough to become a presidential hopeful.
