TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Jakarta Governor Anies Baswedan is targeting the capital to have 170 kilometers of bike lanes built by the end of the year. In total, the provincial government wants to build 500 kilometers of bicycle lanes.
"Hopefully by the end of the year we will have more than 170 kilometers of bicycle lanes. Among those would be the 11.2-kilometer permanent bike lanes, which are very visible on Sudirman Road," Anies said at the Transportation Ministry building in Jakarta, Friday, 4 June.
He said the capital government will continue to campaign for cycling as a means of transportation as well as an easy-to-do sport.
"You don't need special clothes, special shoes, or a special bike. As long as you have a bike, can ride it, and wear a helmet, then you can go," he said.
He has also asked buildings in the capital to provide 10 percent of their total parking space for bicycles. In office buildings, Anies Baswedan requested that washing stations are provided for employees who cycle to work.
