TEMPO.CO, JakartaPresident Joko "Jokowi" Widodo stated that Indonesia would oppose all practices of trade protectionism in the guise of a campaign to protect the environment committed by other countries or groups. According to him, each country needs to strengthen ties in realizing green development at the global level.

“We must avoid protectionism under the guise of environmental issues. Pro-environmental parameters must be clear and carried out justly and transparently,” said the President during a virtual speech at the Partnering for Green Growth and Global Goals - P4G Summit 2030 as broadcasted on Presidential Secretariat’s YouTube channel on Monday, May 31.

He mentioned fundamental steps to ensure the achievement of green development at the global level, among others, are creating an enabling environment that encourages synergy between investment and job creation with green development.

“Indonesia has implemented a low carbon development plan which is an integral part of the national mid-term development plan. Indonesia has also launched the Job Creation Law as a manifestation of Indonesia's commitment so that the economic and social progress does not detrimental for the environment,” Widodo added.

Another step, he went on, included encouraging innovation in supporting resource mobilization. The availability of financial support and technology transfer is the key to success for green development and carbon neutrality. Thus, he said the country is open to investment and technology transfer.

“Indonesia is developing the largest green industrial area in the world, in North Kalimantan, which has great potential in the development of renewable energy. Indonesia also has the vision to build a carbon market and will become the owner of the largest carbon stock in the world,” said Jokowi.
