TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The National Police's Special Anti-Terror Detachment or Densus 88 arrested ten suspected terrorists in Merauke, Papua. This was confirmed by the Papua Regional Police Head of the Public Relations Unit, Sr. Comr. Ahmad Mustofa Kamal.
“Yes, that's right. [For further information,] please go to the police headquarters,” said Kamal via a text message on Monday, May 31.
As reported by Antara, the ten suspected terrorists were allegedly planning to commit a suicide bombing. Merauke Police Chief Adjunct Senior Commissioner Untung Sangaji said they have been detained since May 28.
“They are suspected of planning to commit suicide bombings at several churches in Merauke, Jagebob, Kurik, Semangga, and Tanah Miring,” said Untung.
Previously, Densus 88 in July 2020 stated that there were suspected terrorist groups affiliated with ISIS in Papua. The terror groups were also allegedly part of the Jamaah Ansharut Daulah (JAD) group network and had been detected in the country’s easternmost province since 2018.
