TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Communication and Information (Kominfo) Minister Johnny G. Plate said state-owned telecommunication firm Telkomsel is carrying out the operational eligibility test of 5G network technology in Indonesia.
Johnny revealed that six residential areas will have the opportunity to be the first adopters of the technology. “The launching will be in Jakarta, in six residential areas, namely Kelapa Gading, Pondok Indah, Pantai Indah Kapuk, BSD, Widya Chandra, and Alam Sutera,” said the minister as quoted from Bisnis.com on Wednesday, May 19.
The 5G coverage rollout, he added, will be followed in other cities, including Batam, Medan, Solo, Bandung, Surabaya, Makassar, Denpasar, and Balikpapan, as well as various cities and other priority locations.
According to the minister, each cellular operator willing to provide internet services using new technology is required to perform the operational eligible test based on the applicable regulations.
“This is to ensure that cellular services provided to the public have met adequate service quality,” Johnny said.
Previously, Telkomsel had been testing the 5G network since 2017. One of the commercial trials of the 5G network conducted by the company was the implementation of autonomous vehicles in the 2018 Asian Games.
