TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian government announced that this year's Eid al-Fitr day falls on Thursday, May 13. However, due to the Covid-19 pandemic situation, the Religious Affairs Minister Yaqut Cholil Qoumas called on the public to celebrate Eid Eve, locally known as malam takbiran, and the Eid prayers at home.
"Due to the Covid-19 pandemic situation, I appeal for the malam takbiran and Eid prayers to be held at home. I will also celebrate the Eid Eve at home with my family," the minister said in a video conference on Tuesday, May 11, 2021.
Yaqut hopes the Eid al-Fitr would improve the sense of caring of each other. "Let us keep on helping and sharing [to each others]. Hopefully the Covid-19 pandemic will soon be contained and Indonesia will be free of the pandemic," he remarked.
The Religious Affairs Ministry has previously issued the guidelines on the establishment of Eid prayers during the Covid-19 pandemic. The issuance, among others, also ban to hold the Eid Eve celebration (malam takbiran) in crowds.
The areas with red and orange zone status are also asked to hold Eid prayers at home, while the green and yellow zones are allowed to do it at the mosques or fields with strict health protocols implementation.
