Wisma Atlet Preps for Potential Surge in COVID-19 Cases after Eid Holidays

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Wisma Atlet Emergency Hospital for coronavirus patients in Kemayoran, Central Jakarta, is currently preparing for a possible case surge ahead of the Eid al-Fitr national holidays.

The hospital's spokesperson, Maj. Gen. Tugas Ratmono, said in a written statement on May 7 that the hospital management must anticipate every possibility that could happen by not reducing the available hospital beds although the occupancy rate was well below 30 percent.

“Our capacity is 5,994 beds and it will not be reduced even though the occupancy rate is under 30 percent,” said the major general.

The hospital will also maintain the current number of healthcare workers although the number of COVID-19 patients have dropped. He said it would be more dangerous to let their guard down amid the current pandemic situation.

Tugas said two factors were motivating the hospital to remain on its toes: the mobility of people during Eid celebrations that always increases annually, and the emergence of the new coronavirus strains from India, United Kingdom, and South Africa.
