TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Hundreds of factory workers from West Karawang staged a demonstration in KM 31 of Cikarang toll road as they could not enter Bekasi because of the toll road closure.
“It is a protest from workers [boarding shuttle service for employee transportation] who want to cross Cikarang Barat toll gate from Cikampek,” said Jakarta Police Traffic Head Sr. Comr. Sambodo Purnomo Yogo on Thursday, May 6, 2021.
Sambodo explained that his side had indeed closed the road in order to prevent disorder between vehicles from Karawang and vehicles who were asked to turn around because of attempting to return to their hometown amid the Eid homecoming ban policy.
“The condition is now under control and the traffic flow is already smooth,” he added.
Previously, a video of bus drivers and workers staging a rally went viral on social media. Hundreds of workers took to the streets and protested against the closure. They also parked their vehicles on the road.
Jakarta Police Traffic Sub Directorate of Highway patrol (PJR) Head Comr. Akmal said his side had reopened the blockage at West Cikarang toll gate. Workers had been able to enter Bekasi and head to their respective workplaces.
