TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Jakarta Police Traffic Directorate arrested a number of people attempting to cross the Jakarta Greater Area or Jabodetabek border by hiding in a vegetable truck for Eid homecoming or mudik.
“At 01:05, the National Police secured a truck loaded with vegetables and also travelers in KM 31 of Cikarang toll road heading to Cikampek,” tweeted the traffic directorate’s Twitter account @TMCPoldaMetro early today, May 6, 2021.
The arrest of a number of travelers hiding in the vegetable truck met with various responses from the netizens. Many of them lamented the police’s action.
The government had long announced the ban on Eid homecoming from May 6-17, 2021, in an effort to prevent coronavirus transmission that causes Covid-19.
Jakarta Police Traffic Director Sr. Come. Sambodo Purnomo Yogo said his side had closed the Mohammad Bin Zayed (MBZ) elevated toll road from Jakarta towards Cikampek. “Starting midnight, the Jakarta-Cikampek elevated toll road from Jakarta heading to Cikampek will be closed,” said Sambodo.
The closure, he explained, was part of the 2021 Ketupat Jaya Operation which aimed to prevent Jabodetabek residents from returning to their hometown for Eid al-Fitr.
