Jakarta Deputy Gov Calls for Online Shopping to Prevent Crowds

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Jakarta Deputy Governor Ahmad Riza Patria suggested residents turn to online shopping so as to avoid crowds in markets and shopping centers. According to him, crowds have the potential to cause Covid-19 transmission.

“If you want to shop, please shop online because most products can already be purchased online. The local government itself shopped via e-orders,” said Riza at the City Hall on Wednesday, May 5, 2021. At the end of last week, the capital saw a massive crowd at Tanah Abang Market. There were even 100,000 visitors last Sunday.

Riza acknowledged that as Eid al-Fitr is coming, people must complete their needs for holidays so that public mobility in shopping centers intensifies. However, being outdoors is very unsafe in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic, and so the safest place now is at home, he opined.

The Gerindra politician also appealed to the public not to hold breaking-the-fast or bukber gatherings. Besides, the central government decided to bar all officials from hosting Eid al-Fitr open house.

People are expected to help the government to monitor and report violations of the predetermined health protocols, the Home Affairs Ministry’s policy that limits the attendance for bukber gatherings, and the Eid homecoming ban.

“The community is part of supervisors by providing information if there is a violation,” said Riza Patria.
