TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - State-owned agribusiness firm PT Rajawali Nusantara Indonesia (RNI) through state-owned livestock company PT Berdikari imported frozen boneless beef from Brazil. The first supply of 140 tons of frozen meat imports arrived at Tanjung Priok Port, Jakarta, last Saturday, May 1, 2021.
The import was carried out in a bid to maintain price stability and meat supply ahead of Eid al-Fitr. Other than strengthening the national food security, the import was also the government’s effort to assess the quality of beef products from Brazil.
“This is an opportunity to see the quality of Brazilian beef. So imports are not only aimed to meet supply but also to learn the process so that the domestic beef industry will be better,” said RNI President Director Arief Prasetyo Adi in a press statement on Sunday, May 2.
According to him, this was also in line with the order of State-Owned Enterprise (SOE) Minister Erick Thohir to study the food system transformation of meat commodities. One of the transformations included the plan to purchase cattle farms in Belgium to reduce frozen meat imports in the future.
Arief said the SOE food clusters, especially companies engaged in the livestock industry, still had import assignments from the government until the end of 2021 given the increasing demand for meat and limited domestic production.
