TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Jakarta Metro Police have named a suspect in the crowds of Jakmania, the supporters of Jakarta's soccer club Persija, at the Hotel Indonesia or HI Roundabout on April 26, 2021.
“The initials [of the suspect] are BR,” said Jakarta Metro Police’s Head of Public Relations, Sr. Comr. Yusri Yunus, at his office, South Jakarta, Friday, April 30, 2021.
According to Yusri, BR allegedly called on people to gather via his Facebook account to celebrate the victory of Persija that was crowned as champion of the 2021 Menpora Cup.
Previously reported, a huge crowd of avid Persija fans on early Monday was suspected to violate the COVID-19 health protocols by failing to maintain physical distancing and wear face masks.
Yusri said the suspect was not present in the early Monday crowds. The Jakarta Metro Police then deployed personnel to disperse the crowds until 03:00 local time.
“He (the suspect) claimed to say it was just for fun. Because he thought that every time Persija wins, [supporters] will gather there,” Yusri added.
The police spokesperson ensured that BR was not a member of the Persija club management or Jakmania. “He is just a sympathizer,” he said.
