TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia will use Chinese-sourced Covid-19 vaccine Sinopharm for private vaccination program touted as the ‘Gotong Royong’ (mutual cooperation). The Food and Drugs Monitoring Agency (BPOM) on Friday has officially issued an emergency use authorization (EUA) for the vaccine.
“It adds one more type of vaccine that will be used for the Gotong Royong vaccination,” said BPOM Head Penny Lukito in her statement on April 30. “We intend to quickly reach herd immunity with a plethora of vaccine types.”
The name for the vaccination program is based on its initial design where the government worked hand-in-hand with stakeholders from the private sector to source the vaccines which will be used to vaccinate their workers.
The Sinopharm vaccine was scheduled to arrive in Indonesia on Friday noon and registered Kimia Farma as its distributor here. The BPOM will conduct a thorough check on the vaccines for 3 days before officially allowing its use for future vaccinations.
