TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian Navy asserted that it will continue to evacuate the wreckage of the KRI Nanggala-402 submarine which had sunk in the north waters of Bali. Until now, the team is still in the area where the submarine was found.
“Many navy ships are still there until now. MV Swift Rescue from Singapore also helps the evacuation,” said assistant for planning and budgeting to the Navy chief of staff, Rear Adm. Muhammad Ali in Cilangkap, East Jakarta, Tuesday, April 27.
Ali explained that the team had found the hydrophone and torpedo from the sunken submarine which was then lifted by using a remotely operated vehicle (ROV).
“We are trying to evacuate parts [of the sunken submarine] as much as possible in small parts because the ROV can only lift objects weighing 150 kilograms. But we will later coordinate to lift bigger objects,” he added.
The naval submarine lost contact with the operators on Wednesday, April 21, 2021, in the north waters of Bali, while preparing to conduct a torpedo drill. Three days later, the German-built submarine was declared sunk and 53 crew onboard were confirmed dead a day after.
The KRI Nanggala-402 submarine was found broken into three parts in the deep of the sea at a depth of 838 meters. The team found it difficult to conduct evacuation due to a lack of equipment at this time.
