TEMPO.CO, Bandung The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) said that there is potential for extreme weather in the Bandung basin area until the end of April 2021, such as heavy rain accompanied by hail, lightning, and strong winds as happened last Sunday afternoon.

"Or there can be a tornado," said Teguh Rahayu, Head of the Bandung Geophysical Station, on Thursday, April 15, 2021.

One of the factors causing hail in the Greater Bandung area is the high humidity which could increase the formation of rain clouds and encourage strong convection processes that lead to the formation of the supercell type of cumulonimbus clouds.

"So it triggers the formation of hail accompanied by strong winds," Rahayu added.

She went on that the public must also be aware of potential impacts of bad weather, including floods and landslides. "Some hilly areas of West Java, such as Garut, Sumedang, Sukabumi Utara, and Bogor, still have the chance of landslides, although they are not significant," she explained.

The potential for extreme weather during the transition period in West Java varied. Several regions in the north such as Bekasi, Karawang, Subang, Indramayu, central and northern parts of Cirebon, as well as Bogor, Purwakarta, and Kuningan have entered the dry season.

West Java regions that have not yet entered the dry season still have chances to be showered by light to heavy rain, especially in the central and southeastern parts. "This potential lasts until early June 2021," Rahayu said. BMKG asks people living in the areas to always stay vigilant of significant weather changes.
