House Grants Jokowi's Request to Form Investment Ministry

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The House of Representatives (DPR) has officially given a green light for President Joko “Jokowi” Widodoto establish a new ministry dubbed the Investment Ministry during the House plenary meeting on Friday, April 9.

The President previously said he was intent on converging the Research and Technology Ministry with the Education and Culture Ministry to create the Ministry of Investment. 

House deputy speaker Sufmi Dasco Ahmad said in the plenary session that House factions had expressed their views about the convergence and the formation of a new ministry that referred to Article 19 (1) of Law No.39/2008 on State Ministries. 

“The changes due to the separation or mergers of ministries are done under the House's considerations,” the deputy speaker announced in the plenary meeting.

President Jokowi previously sent an official letter mentioning this under the President’s Letter No.R-14/Pres/03/2021 on changes of state ministries. The House deliberated this in a consultation meeting on Thursday, April 8 and agreed on the two aspects from the President. 

The first is the merged task and functions of the Research and Technology Ministry and Education and Culture Ministry to become the Kemendikbud dan Ristek. While the second aspect was the formation of the Investment Ministry that was meant to boost investments and job opportunities.
